Does Credit Card Insurance Cover a Rental Car in the USA? (2026)
Updated October 30, 2026 · By Yaniv Segal, RentCarUSA
In short: Sometimes, and only partly. Travel insurance that comes with credit cards issued outside the US mainly covers medical costs and luggage. Rental car cover, if it exists, is usually a refund of the deductible for damage to the car, sometimes only as an extension you must buy in advance, with a cap and conditions. It almost never covers third-party liability while driving. Before you decline cover at the counter, check with your card company.
What does credit card travel insurance usually include?
Many gold and platinum credit cards come with travel insurance abroad, which applies under certain conditions, for example when the flight ticket or holiday package was paid with that card. The main covers are usually:
- Medical costs abroad.
- Luggage and documents.
- Liability to a third party, subject to exclusions, which usually include the use of a motor vehicle.
- Sometimes cancellation or shortening of the trip.
A rental car is not automatically part of this list. In some summaries of platinum card cover, "cancellation of the deductible for a rental car abroad" appears as an extension that is valid only if it was purchased, with a cap of a few thousand dollars. Other cards have no such cover at all. The terms change between companies, between card types and between years, so you cannot assume anything without checking.
What is the difference between a "deductible refund" and full insurance?
This is the most confusing point. Even when there is cover, it usually works as a refund and not as a waiver:
| Rental company damage waiver (LDW/CDW) | Refund through a credit card or policy | |
|---|---|---|
| Who pays for the damage at the moment it happens | The rental company waives the charge | You. The company charges your card |
| When you get the money | Not relevant | After you file a claim and it is approved |
| Documents | Damage report at the branch | Damage report, invoices, rental agreement, proof of payment and more |
| Cap | Usually the value of the car, subject to the contract | A cap set in the policy, sometimes a few thousand dollars |
| Third-party liability (damage to others) | No. This is separate cover | Usually no |
In a rental of a month or more, the practical meaning is: if damage happens, the amount will be charged to your card, and you will finance it until the claim is approved. If the cap is lower than the cost of the damage, you pay the difference. The differences between the two methods are also explained in the guide to the deductible on a rental car in the USA.
Why is this especially sensitive in the USA?
- The base price on US websites usually does not include a damage waiver. If you rely on your credit card and decline the LDW at the counter, you remain exposed to damage to the car up to the refund cap and beyond it.
- Third-party liability in California is not always included in the rental. In California the standard rental agreement usually does not include liability insurance, and the legal minimum is relatively low: $30,000/$60,000/$15,000, as of 2026. Credit card insurance will not close this gap. Details are in third-party liability in California.
- Long rentals. Some policies limit the number of rental days covered or the length of the trip. In a rental of 26 days or more, this can be critical.
- Car types. Some policies exclude luxury cars, pickup trucks or large vehicles. If you are taking a minivan or a 7-seat SUV, make sure it is covered.
What should you ask your card company before the trip?
Call or ask in writing for the full policy, not only the summary, and ask:
- Do I have cover for damage to a rental car in the USA, or do I need to buy an extension? If so, do I need to activate it before I leave home?
- What is the cap in dollars, and is there also a deductible in the policy itself?
- Does the cover depend on paying for the rental or the flight with this card?
- How many consecutive rental days are covered?
- Does the cover apply if I decline the LDW at the counter, or only if I bought it?
- Are tyres, windshields, the underside of the car, keys and towing covered?
- Is there cover for liability to a third party while driving, and up to what amount?
- Which documents must I submit, and how long does it take to get a refund?
Keep the answers in writing. If any answer is "no", "not sure" or "it depends", it is safer to assume there is no cover.
So what should you do in practice?
For most people renting a car for a month in Los Angeles, the simplest way is to make sure the price itself already includes a damage waiver (CDW/LDW) and third-party liability with a high limit, and to keep the credit card insurance as a backup layer, for example for medical costs.
This is exactly our approach: every quote includes damage and theft cover for the car (CDW/LDW), third-party liability up to $300,000, all taxes and fees, and unlimited miles. For example, for 26 days: Economy (Chevrolet Spark or similar) $806, Small SUV (Chevrolet Trax or similar) $936, Minivan (Chrysler Pacifica or similar) $1,144.
You will need your credit card in any case: a physical card in the driver's name, for a deposit hold of a few hundred dollars up to about $1,000. Debit cards and Apple Pay are not accepted for the hold. More on this in credit card deposit hold for a car rental in the USA, and the full guide is monthly car rental in Los Angeles.
Frequently asked questions
Does a regular gold card cover a rental car?
Sometimes yes and sometimes no, and this changes between card companies, card types and years. Do not rely on what was true on your last trip. Ask for the current policy.
If I bought a rental car extension on my travel insurance, am I also covered for third-party liability?
Usually not. These extensions cover damage to the rental car itself. The third-party liability section in travel insurance usually excludes the use of a motor vehicle.
Does the rental company recognise my credit card insurance?
Usually the rental company does not deal with your card's insurer. It charges you, and you file a claim for a refund. So even with cover, you will need available credit on your card.
If everything is included with you, do I still need travel insurance?
Yes. Travel insurance covers other things, mainly medical costs, which are critical in the USA. Our cover relates to the car and to damage caused to others while driving.
