How Many Miles Do You Drive in a Month in Los Angeles? Distances and Routes 2026

Updated October 30, 2026 · By Yaniv Segal, RentCarUSA

In short: A person who lives in Los Angeles and drives only inside the city usually adds 800–1,200 miles a month (1,300–1,900 km). Two or three day trips are enough to pass 1,500 miles, and a month that includes Las Vegas or Highway 1 to San Francisco easily reaches 2,500 miles or more. So on a long rental, unlimited miles are not a luxury. They protect you from a surprise bill.

Why do people drive so much in Los Angeles?

Los Angeles is not a compact city. Los Angeles County alone is larger than some small countries, and public transport does not cover most routes in a convenient way. Normal errands, such as the supermarket, school, a meeting downtown and dinner in Santa Monica, can add up to 40–50 miles in one day.

For comparison, according to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the average American driver drives about 13,500 miles a year, or about 1,100 miles a month. And a visitor usually drives more than a permanent resident, because a visitor also wants to travel.

Note: one mile equals 1.6 km. All distances in this guide are road distances, rounded.

What are the distances inside the city?

Route One-way distance Typical driving time
LAX → Santa Monica about 8 miles (13 km) 20–45 minutes
LAX → Hollywood about 15 miles (24 km) 30–60 minutes
LAX → Downtown about 17 miles (27 km) 25–60 minutes
Encino (the Valley) → Santa Monica about 14 miles (23 km) 25–60 minutes
Santa Monica → Zuma Beach, Malibu about 25 miles (40 km) 35–60 minutes
Downtown → Disneyland, Anaheim about 26 miles (42 km) 35–75 minutes

The wide range of times is not a mistake. In Los Angeles the same route can take 20 minutes at 10 a.m. on a Sunday and one hour on a Thursday at 5:30 p.m. This leads to an important tip: in Los Angeles you measure distance in minutes, but you pay (if there is a cap) by miles.

Which day trips add the most miles?

Destination One-way distance from Los Angeles Round trip
Santa Barbara about 95 miles (150 km) about 190 miles
Big Bear (lake and mountains) about 100 miles (160 km) about 200 miles
Palm Springs about 107 miles (170 km) about 215 miles
San Diego about 120 miles (195 km) about 240 miles
Joshua Tree about 130 miles (210 km) about 260 miles
Las Vegas about 270 miles (435 km) about 540 miles
Yosemite about 300 miles (480 km) about 600 miles
San Francisco (via I-5) about 380 miles (610 km) about 760 miles
Grand Canyon, South Rim about 490 miles (790 km) about 980 miles

Note that these distances are from the center. If you stay in the Valley or in the south of the city, add or subtract 15–30 miles. And on the road you always drive more than planned: a stop for food, a viewpoint, parking in a different place. For the San Diego trip, see San Diego day trip, and for Vegas, see Los Angeles to Las Vegas by rental car.

How many miles will you add? Four scenarios

1. "Living in the city, working or running errands" – daily drives of 25–40 miles, with no trips outside the city. Total for the month: about 800–1,200 miles.

2. "A family on a long vacation" – city driving, two beach days in Malibu, Disneyland, and one day trip to San Diego or Santa Barbara. Example calculation: 900 (city) + 100 (Malibu twice) + 70 (Disneyland) + 240 (San Diego) = about 1,300–1,500 miles.

3. "A visit with weekend trips" – a base in the city, plus Palm Springs, Joshua Tree and a weekend in Las Vegas. Example calculation: 900 + 215 + 260 + 560 = about 1,900–2,200 miles.

4. "A road-trip month" – Highway 1 to San Francisco and back, plus Vegas and the Grand Canyon. Example calculation: 900 in the city + about 850 for the San Francisco loop + about 1,200 for the Vegas and Grand Canyon loop = 3,000 miles or more. We describe the coast route in Highway 1 from Los Angeles to San Francisco.

What does this mean when you choose a rental car?

A mileage cap on a rental, on platforms such as Turo or with private owners, sometimes looks generous, for example 1,000 or 1,500 miles a month. But based on the scenarios above, most visitors go over it. Every extra mile is charged separately, and in a month of travel this can reach hundreds of dollars. A detailed comparison is in Monthly rental car vs Turo.

All our rentals include unlimited miles, with no cap and no calculation at the end of the month. The only thing worth calculating is fuel, which is not included. An economical car that does about 30 miles per gallon will use about 50 gallons in 1,500 miles, and a 7-seat SUV will use more. If you plan a lot of freeway driving, keep this in mind when you choose the size of the car.

Frequently asked questions

How many miles do people drive per day on average in Los Angeles?

A person who stays in the city usually drives 25–40 miles a day (40–65 km). A day with a drive to the beach, to Disneyland or to a meeting on the other side of the city can reach 60–80 miles.

Are 1,000 miles a month enough?

Only if you stay almost all the time in one area. One trip to San Diego or Las Vegas already adds 240–560 miles, so most visitors go over this limit.

Is there a mileage limit on your rentals?

No. All prices include unlimited miles, damage protection (CDW/LDW), third-party liability up to $300,000 and taxes. Only driving to Mexico is not allowed.

How do I convert miles to kilometers quickly?

Multiply by 1.6. So 100 miles is about 160 km, and a speed of 65 miles per hour on the freeway is about 105 km/h.
