Monthly Rental Car vs Turo in Los Angeles: Which Is Better Value in 2026

Updated October 30, 2026 · By Yaniv Segal, RentCarUSA

In short: On Turo you can find a car for a month in Los Angeles for about $830–1,300, but the conditions change from host to host: mileage limit, pickup, deposit and, most of all, third-party liability that starts at the legal minimum only. An organised monthly rental with full protection, unlimited miles and a fixed price agreed in advance is usually the safer choice for people who drive a lot or do not want surprises.

What is the main difference between Turo and a rental company?

Turo is a platform where private people (and sometimes small businesses) rent out their own cars. This means you do not sign with a branch that has a fleet of cars, but with a "host" who sets the price, the mileage limit, the delivery location and their own house rules. Turo provides the infrastructure: payment, protection plans and support.

With a rental company the rules are uniform: a car from the fleet, a branch with opening hours, a replacement car if something breaks, and a standard contract. On a long rental of three weeks or more, this difference matters much more than on a weekend.

How much does it really cost for 26 days?

We checked prices ourselves on October 25–26, 2026, for 26 days at LAX, a driver over 25, with the same coverage (damage protection, third-party liability and taxes):

Option Approximate price for 26 days What you should know
Turo, monthly rental about $830–1,300 Conditions depend on the host; fees and the protection plan change the final amount
Private Facebook groups about $700–950 per month Usually older cars, cash deposit, protection varies
A major rental brand's website, as a non-US resident about $1,277 (Corolla-size car) Similar all-inclusive package
Car only + protection bought at the counter $1,900 or more (small SUV) Damage waiver about $28 per day and liability about $13 per day
RentCarUSA $806–1,196 depending on car type CDW/LDW, third-party liability up to $300,000, taxes and unlimited miles included

With us, for example, a family sedan (Kia K4 or similar) for 26 days costs $858 in total, and a midsize SUV (Nissan Rogue or similar) $962. The exact model is decided at pickup.

How does protection work on Turo, and why is it critical for visitors?

As of fall 2026, Turo offers travelers in the US several protection plans for damage to the car itself:

The point most visitors miss is third-party liability. Every Turo trip includes only the minimum coverage the state requires. In California, since 2025, the legal minimum is $30,000 per injured person, $60,000 per accident and $15,000 for property damage. In an accident with an injury or with a luxury car, these amounts run out very quickly. Turo has an additional liability option up to $300,000, but according to its help pages it is not available in every state and is meant for US residents, so a visitor from abroad may not be able to get it at all. We explain this in more detail in the guide Third-party liability in California.

With us, third-party liability up to $300,000 and damage and theft protection (CDW/LDW) are included in every price, with no extra choice at the counter.

What else is different: miles, pickup, deposit and young drivers?

Mileage limit. On Turo each host sets a daily, weekly or monthly limit. In some cases with a large monthly discount, the monthly limit for a regular car in the US is 3,300 miles, but many hosts set less. Above the limit you pay per mile, and the rate is based on the daily price. If you plan Highway 1 and Las Vegas in the same month, you can easily go over the limit. To estimate how much you will drive, read How many miles do you drive a month in Los Angeles.

Pickup and return. On Turo the handover is at the host's address, by paid delivery, or in a set parking lot at the airport with an airport fee. With us, you take an organised shuttle from the LAX terminal to the nearby branch, and you can return the car at LAX itself at no extra cost.

Licence. Turo accepts a permanent, valid licence from your home country, but an International Driving Permit does not replace it. With us, you need a passport, a valid home-country licence and a physical credit card in the driver's name.

Young drivers. On Turo a main driver under 25 pays a young driver fee. With us, drivers aged 21–24 also pay a daily surcharge, but it is already included in the quote you receive.

Additional driver. On Turo this costs $5 per day up to a maximum of $25 per trip.

When is Turo actually a good fit?

To be fair: Turo can be a good choice when you need a car for two or three days, when you want a specific model (a convertible, a Tesla, a pickup truck), or when you have private US car insurance that covers you. Also for short drives in the city without long trips, the mileage limit matters less.

On the other hand, on a rental of three weeks or more the risks add up: a host who cancels at the last minute, a car that breaks down with no immediate replacement, charges after the trip for tolls or cleaning, and disputes about scratches. All of these are less likely with an organised rental.

How do you check a Turo offer before you book?

  1. Confirm the mileage limit for the whole period, and how much each extra mile costs.
  2. Check which protection plan you chose, and what the actual deductible is.
  3. Ask yourself whether $30,000 per injured person is enough third-party liability for you.
  4. Calculate the total amount after the trip fee, airport fee, delivery and young driver fee.
  5. Read reviews about the specific host, not only about the car.
  6. Photograph the car from all sides at handover and at return.

After you do the calculation, compare it to an organised offer. The full comparison of all the options is also in the guide to monthly car rental in Los Angeles.

Frequently asked questions

Can a visitor rent a car on Turo with a home-country licence?

Yes, Turo accepts a permanent, valid licence issued in your home country. An International Driving Permit alone is not enough and does not replace the original licence.

Is Turo's third-party liability enough for driving in California?

The basic coverage is the state's legal minimum, which in California is $30,000 per injured person. This is very low compared to medical costs in the US, and the additional coverage up to $300,000 is not always available to non-residents.

Is Turo cheaper than a monthly rental?

Sometimes the base price is lower, but after fees, the protection plan and extra miles, the difference becomes smaller or disappears. With us, the price for 26 days starts at $806 with everything included, and it stays fixed also during holidays.

What happens if the car breaks down in the middle of the month?

On Turo it depends on the host and on their availability. With an organised rental there is a branch and a fleet of cars, so it is usually easier to get a replacement car.
