LAX Rental Car Pickup in 2026: Shuttles, Terminals and Step by Step
Updated October 30, 2026 · By Yaniv Segal, RentCarUSA
In short: At LAX there are no rental desks inside the terminals, so every car pickup starts with a shuttle. With us, you leave the terminal on an organised hotel shuttle to a branch a few minutes from the airport, show your passport, home-country licence and physical credit card, check the car and drive away. You can return the car at LAX itself, at no extra cost.
Why do you need a shuttle at all, and what changed at LAX in 2026?
LAX is shaped like a horseshoe: nine terminals around one inner road (World Way) that always has heavy traffic. To reduce traffic in the horseshoe, the airport moved almost all transport services outside. As of fall 2026, the situation is:
| What you are looking for | Where it is | Signs |
|---|---|---|
| Shuttles of the major rental companies | Arrivals level (lower), outer island | Orange signs |
| Taxis, Uber and Lyft | LAX-it area, east of Terminal 1, by shuttle | Green signs |
| Hotel shuttles | Usually departures level (upper), next to the curb | Red columns |
In March 2026 the major rental companies completed their move to the new consolidated rental car center (ConRAC) on 98th Street. The airport's internal train (Automated People Mover), which is supposed to connect the terminals to this center, was delayed again, and according to the latest reports it is planned to open to passengers on January 6, 2027. Until then, and also after, the shuttles continue to operate. LAX-it is also supposed to close only after the train starts working.
The bottom line: do not look for a desk in the terminal. You have a fixed route to the shuttle, and we send it to you in advance.
What should you prepare before the flight?
It is a good idea to arrange a few things at home, because after a long flight and passport control nobody wants to search for documents:
- A valid passport.
- A valid physical driving licence from your home country. We explain International Driving Permits in Foreign driving licence and IDP in California.
- A physical credit card in the driver's name for the deposit hold. A debit card or Apple Pay is not accepted for the hold. The hold can be several hundred dollars and up to about $1,000, so make sure you have enough available credit. Full details are in the guide to credit cards and the deposit hold.
- A phone with a data plan or eSIM that works from the moment you land, so you can receive WhatsApp messages and open navigation.
- The booking confirmation saved on your phone.
What do you do from the moment you land? Step by step
- Passport control and luggage. International flights usually land at the Tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT). The line at passport control can take from 20 minutes to more than an hour, depending on the time.
- Send us a message. When you have your luggage, write to us on WhatsApp that you are out. We will confirm the exact pickup point based on your terminal.
- Go to the shuttle stop. Hotel shuttles usually stop on the upper level, next to the curb, at stops marked with red columns. If you are on the lower level, go up by elevator or stairs. Do not take the green LAX-it shuttle or the orange shuttles of other companies.
- A short drive. The branch is very close to the airport, and the drive takes a few minutes, depending on traffic on World Way.
- At the desk. Show your passport, licence and credit card, and pay the balance. The balance is never higher than the quote you received. Damage protection (CDW/LDW), third-party liability up to $300,000, taxes and fees are already included, so you do not need to add anything. You may, and should, politely refuse extras you did not ask for.
- Check the car. Before you leave, walk around the car and record a video: scratches, bumpers, windshield, wheels and fuel gauge. Make sure the tank is full, because you need to return it full.
- Set up before driving. Connect your phone to CarPlay or Android Auto, adjust the mirrors and set your navigation while you are still in the parking lot.
How do you leave the LAX area without stress?
The first drive is usually the hardest: you are tired, the car is new to you and the interchanges are big. A few tips:
- If you land between 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. on a weekday, the 405 north (to Santa Monica and the Valley) and the 105 east are very crowded. Sometimes it is better to stop and eat in the area and leave after rush hour.
- If you stay close to the airport, local roads such as Sepulveda Blvd and Lincoln Blvd let you reach Westchester, Culver City, Marina del Rey and Santa Monica without using a freeway.
- Turning right on a red light is allowed in California after a full stop, unless a sign prohibits it. This is one of the differences you will meet in the first minutes. More differences are in Driving in Los Angeles for visitors.
- After a long overnight flight, if you feel sleepy, it is better to rest before a long drive.
How do you return the car at LAX?
You can return the car at LAX itself, at no extra cost, and go straight to your flight. Before the return:
- Fill up the tank. There are gas stations on Century Blvd and nearby. Prices at stations close to the airport are usually higher, but the difference on one tank is smaller than the charge for returning the car not full.
- Empty the car. Check the glove box, the trunk and under the seats.
- Take photos again of the car, the fuel gauge and the mileage at the time of return.
- Leave extra time. For an international flight home, plan to arrive at the airport about three hours before departure, and add more time for traffic and for returning the car.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a rental desk inside the terminal at LAX?
No. With every rental company at LAX, you reach the car by shuttle. With us, it is an organised hotel shuttle to the nearby branch, and we send exact instructions before you land.
What is LAX-it, and do I need it?
LAX-it is the pickup area for taxis, Uber and Lyft, east of Terminal 1. If you are picking up a rental car, you do not need to go there, and you should not take the green shuttle that goes there by mistake.
What if my flight is delayed?
Tell us on WhatsApp as soon as you know. The booking is kept, and we arrange the pickup for your actual landing time.
Can I pay the deposit with a debit card or Apple Pay?
No. The deposit hold requires a physical credit card in the driver's name. Make sure in advance that you have enough available credit.
