Minivan or SUV for a Family in Los Angeles: How to Choose in 2026

Updated October 30, 2026 · By Yaniv Segal, RentCarUSA

In short: A family of five or more people, with large suitcases or child seats, will almost always do better in a minivan. Behind the third row it has about twice as much space as a 7-seat SUV, and it has sliding doors. A 7-seat SUV is right when the third row is used only sometimes, or when you plan trips to the mountains in winter. A family of four does well in a 5-seat midsize SUV.

What is the real difference in trunk space?

This is where most families make a mistake. Two "7-seat" cars sound the same, but when all the seats are in use, the space left at the back is completely different. According to manufacturer data (2025 models, approximate liters):

Minivan (Chrysler Pacifica) 7-seat SUV (Nissan Pathfinder) Midsize SUV (Nissan Rogue)
Seats 7 7 5
Space behind the third row about 915 liters (32.3 ft³) about 470 liters (16.6 ft³) No third row
Space behind the second row about 2,480 liters (87.5 ft³) about 1,275 liters (45 ft³) about 1,030 liters (about 36.5 ft³)
Rear doors Sliding Regular Regular
Combined fuel use (approx.) about 22 miles per gallon about 23 miles per gallon about 33 miles per gallon
Our price for 26 days, all included $1,144 ($44 per day) $1,196 ($46 per day) $962 ($37 per day)

"Or similar": the exact model is decided at pickup, and the numbers change a little between models in the same category.

What does this mean in suitcases? These figures are a rough estimate, because everything depends on the size and shape of the suitcases. In a minivan with 7 passengers, usually 3–4 large suitcases (23 kg / 50 lb) fit behind the third row, and in a Pathfinder with 7 passengers about 2 large suitcases, or one suitcase and a few backpacks. A family of five that lands with five large suitcases and a stroller will need to fold part of the third row in an SUV, but in a minivan everything fits with all seats up.

Child seats: what is the law in California, and how does it affect your choice?

Under California law, children under 2 sit in a rear-facing seat (unless they have already passed a certain height or weight). Children under 8 must sit in a child seat or a booster seat in the back seat, unless they are already 4'9" (about 145 cm) tall. The practical results:

  1. Rental child seats are expensive on a long rental. Rental companies usually charge per day, and for a month this adds up to a large amount. Many families bring seats from home. Most airlines carry a child seat as luggage at no extra charge, but check with your airline. Another option is to buy a simple seat in a store such as Target or Walmart after you land.
  2. Sliding doors save your back. Putting a toddler in a seat and fastening the belt in a car parked right next to another car in a supermarket parking lot is much easier when the door slides and does not open outward.
  3. Three seats need width. In a minivan you can divide the seats between two rows. In an SUV, a narrow third row with a rear-facing child seat is usually not practical.

What about parking, mountains and fuel?

Parking: a minivan is longer than most SUVs, but you feel the difference mainly in crowded underground parking garages in Santa Monica and Downtown. When parking on the street in neighborhoods such as Pico-Robertson or Encino, both types are fine. Also, a sliding door does not need space at the side to open.

Trips: on paved roads to Yosemite, the Grand Canyon or Las Vegas both types are suitable, and the minivan is even more comfortable on long drives. In winter, on a drive to mountains such as Big Bear or Mammoth, there may be requirements for snow chains or four-wheel drive, and an SUV with four-wheel drive (if the model you receive has it) gives more confidence. Check road conditions on Caltrans QuickMap before you leave, and check the rules about chains in the contract. We wrote about the routes in the guide from Los Angeles to the Grand Canyon and the national parks.

Fuel: a minivan and a 7-seat SUV use about the same, about 22–23 miles per gallon, which is about $255–270 for every 1,000 miles at October 2026 prices. A midsize SUV saves about one third. In a month of 1,500 miles this is a difference of about $120. A detailed calculation is in the guide to fuel for a rental car in California.

So which one should you choose?

Your situation Recommendation
4 people, normal luggage Midsize SUV
5 people, 2–3 child seats Minivan
6–7 people, a lot of luggage Minivan
4–5 people, need 7 seats only sometimes, winter trips to the mountains 7-seat SUV

With us, the difference between a minivan and a 7-seat SUV is $52 for 26 days. It is too small to choose by price, so choose by your family's daily routine.

Frequently asked questions

Can a 7-seat minivan also have 8 seats?

There are 8-seat versions, but the rental is defined by category. Our price is for a 7-seat minivan. If you are 8 people, write to us in advance.

What if I get a "similar" SUV and not the Pathfinder?

The exact model is decided at pickup, within the same category. If luggage space is critical for you, tell us in advance. For luggage, a minivan is the safer choice.

Can I drive the minivan to Nevada and Arizona?

Yes, with unlimited miles. The only place you may not drive is Mexico.
