Fuel in a Rental Car in California 2026: Filling Up, Prices and Mistakes
Updated October 30, 2026 · By Yaniv Segal, RentCarUSA
In short: In late October 2026, a gallon (3.785 litres) of regular gasoline in Los Angeles costs on average about $5.90. In a long rental, you receive the car with a full tank and return it full. Fuel is not included in the price, so it is useful to know how to pay at the pump with a card issued outside the US, which fuel to choose, and where not to fill up before the return.
How much does fuel cost in California in 2026?
California is usually the state with the most expensive fuel in the continental USA, because of state taxes and special blend standards. According to EIA data, the Los Angeles average for regular gasoline was about $6.21 per gallon in early October 2026 and fell to about $5.88 in the week of October 26. The California average since the start of 2026 is about $5.36 per gallon. Prices change from week to week, and between gas stations in the same neighbourhood there can be a difference of more than a dollar per gallon.
In metric terms: a gallon is almost 3.8 litres, so $5.90 per gallon is about $1.55 per litre.
How much fuel will you use in a month of rental?
It all depends on how much you drive. A family that lives in Los Angeles and drives to work, school and the supermarket usually does 1,000 to 2,000 miles a month, plus a few hundred for each weekend trip (full details in the guide how many miles you drive in a month in Los Angeles). The table shows an estimated cost for every 1,000 miles, based on average combined consumption (city and freeway) and a price of about $5.90 per gallon:
| Car type (or similar) | Estimated consumption (miles per gallon) | Fuel cost per 1,000 miles |
|---|---|---|
| Economy (Chevrolet Spark) | About 33 | About $180 |
| Family sedan (Kia K4) | About 34 | About $175 |
| Large sedan (Kia K5) | About 31 | About $190 |
| Small SUV (Chevrolet Trax) | About 30 | About $195 |
| Midsize SUV (Nissan Rogue) | About 33 | About $180 |
| Minivan (Chrysler Pacifica) | About 22 | About $270 |
| 7-seat SUV (Nissan Pathfinder) | About 23 | About $255 |
Real consumption depends on the model you receive, on traffic and on the air conditioning. A long drive on the I-15 to Las Vegas uses less fuel per mile than crawling on the 405 at rush hour.
How do you pay at the pump with a card issued outside the US?
Almost all gas stations in California are self-service, with no attendant. At most pumps you insert a card and are asked to enter a ZIP code (a 5-digit US postal code) for verification. A card issued outside the US has no US ZIP code, so the transaction is often declined. These are your options:
- Pay inside: Go into the shop, tell the cashier the pump number and the amount, for example "Pump 6, sixty dollars", and pay. If the tank fills before that amount, go back to the cashier and get a refund of the difference. This is the safest way.
- Digital wallet at the pump: At many pumps with a contactless reader, Apple Pay or Google Pay works without a ZIP code question. This works for fuel, but note: for the deposit at the rental counter you need a physical credit card, and a digital wallet is not accepted there.
- Trying your home postcode: Some people report that entering the digits of their home postcode (or the first three digits followed by zeros) sometimes works. There is no certainty about this.
One more thing to know: many pumps place a temporary hold on the card, sometimes of more than a hundred dollars, which is released only after a few days. In a one-month rental with several fill-ups a week, this can add up, so watch your credit limit. Some stations also show a lower price for cash ("Cash Price") and a higher price for cards.
Which fuel should you put in the rental car?
Most gas stations in California have three grades: 87 (Regular), 89 (Mid-grade) and 91 (Premium). The US numbers are not the same as the octane numbers used in many other countries (such as 95/98), because the measuring method is different, but 87 is right for all regular rental cars. There is no reason to pay for premium unless it says otherwise inside the fuel door.
The green handle at the pump is usually diesel, and sometimes there is also E85. Neither is suitable for a regular rental car. Filling with diesel is one of the most expensive mistakes in a car rental, because the car must be towed and the fuel system cleaned. Before you put the nozzle in, always read the label on the button.
How do you return the car full without paying twice?
The car leaves with a full tank and should come back full. If it comes back with less, rental companies charge their own rate for the missing fuel, which is usually much higher than the pump price, and sometimes add a service fee. With the option to buy a full tank in advance, you pay for a whole tank with no refund for what is left, and this is almost never worth it when you keep the car for three weeks or more.
A few simple rules:
- Fill up 5 to 10 miles before the return, not at the last moment. The stations closest to the airport, especially around Century Blvd and Sepulveda Blvd, are known to be very expensive. It is usually cheaper in El Segundo, Westchester or Inglewood, on the way to the airport.
- Keep the receipt with the address, time and number of gallons, until the final bill is closed.
- Photograph the fuel gauge and the mileage when you receive the car and when you return it. With us, the return can be at the LAX terminal itself, so plan your fill-up before you enter the airport loop (this is how it works at LAX).
- Use an app such as GasBuddy or Google Maps to compare prices on the way. A difference of one dollar per gallon on a 15-gallon tank is $15 on every fill-up.
Frequently asked questions
Is fuel included in the rental price?
No. The price includes damage cover, third-party liability, taxes and unlimited miles, but fuel is paid separately. You receive a full tank and return it full.
What do I do if the pump declines my card?
Go into the shop, prepay a set amount for your pump number and get a refund of the difference. Another option is Apple Pay or Google Pay at a pump with a contactless reader.
Is Costco cheaper?
Usually yes, but you can only fill up there with a valid membership card, and sometimes there are long queues. If you do not have a membership, it is not relevant.
Will a hybrid or electric car save me money on fuel?
When you drive thousands of miles a month, the saving can be significant, but there are also disadvantages. We explain this in the guide to an electric or hybrid rental car in Los Angeles.
